Content:Digging stones in labour camp is not the true, especially if one did three years, but has to do another 27 and furthermore is completely innocent. This is the emotional situation of Ted Barnett (Giuliano Gemma), as he decides to turn his back on this inhospitable location and flees with the help of a fellow sufferer. Barnett’s escape lets some people shit stones: These are in first row Sheriff Douglas (Francisco Rabal) and the rich Cobb (Conrado San Martín), who brought the labour camp onto Barnett by false testimonies. Barnett was judged for the murder of his father, founder and director of a small railroad, which the rogues need for their gun running with Mexican bandits. This is, what the villains practiced until now. But freshly shaved and “hairdone”, Barnett shows up to debunk and punish the real murderers and to put paid to the business of Douglas and Cobb. The only helping hands for Barnett are the travelling “medic” Pajarito (Manuel Muniz aka „Pajarito“) and his daughter Dulcie (Gabriella Giorgelli).
| The Gunslinger says: Successful, but a bit lengthy revenge Western by Florestano Vancini, which scores by its solidly realized story. A certain harshness and the credible atmosphere are further pluses of the flick. Giulano Gemma, whose first appearance with hippie mane plus beard I recognized with favour, mutates into a sunshine again with a fast gun and undeniable stuntman qualities. The very busy Spaniard Francisco Rabal and especially Conrado San Martín are worthy opponents, and Nieves Navarro gives a convincing performance as ambivalent beauty, oscillating between dark and light. Camerawork by Francisco Marín once again is veeery good like the score by Trovaioli, which features the “classic” SW instruments like guitars, strings, trumpets up to the bluesharp. At least in the Italian and German version the film with his “Angelface” –references tries to establish a relationship to the “Ringo”-films of Duccio Tessari. But in fact the “real” Angelface is a completely different character and much more amoral than Ted Barnett.
