Content: Even the finest war is over at any time and then? This is the mood of Montgomery Brown (Giuliano Gemma), aka “Ringo”, demobilised ex-Captain of the US-Army at the end of the Civil War. He decides to go back home. But bad news reach his ears: Mexican bandidos, the bros Fuentes (Fernando Sancho, “George Martin “) and their gang, allured by rich deposits of gold, have taken over his hometown. Those, who dared to resist, are pushing up daisies. Masked as poor Mexicano – with coloured hair, the compulsive beard and sombrero, dressed in his best pyjama – Ringo enters the town for his inspection. Hard times have come for Gringos: The Fuentes mob kills everyone, who is at the wrong place at the wrong time. The sheriff (Antonio Casas) is a fucked-up alcoholic and Monty’s whole once influential family is murdered. His wife Elisabeth (Lorella de Luca) is allied with Paco Fuentes (“G.M”.), who is anxious to marry her. Whatta mess! But Ringo isn’t much bent on cleaning up the town: He only wants to regain his wife inclusive his unknown little daughter and leave this hostile ambience. For that reason he hires out as helping hand of eccentric gardener Myosotis (Manuel Muños). Only after Elisabeth, to her he revealed himself, appeals to his honour and conscience, Ringo starts the big weeding – without pyjama, but with his gun in his hand.
| The Gunslinger says: After „Ringo – the Killer“ Duccio Tessari made this joint with nearly identical staff. Gemma inhere is the tired veteran, who only wants to get back his normal civil life, what is impossible because of the circumstances. Because of the Civil War not only the homecoming soldiers are traumatized. The “home-front” is quite shook up too. Ringo doesn’t want to get involved: He isn’t interested neither in the intimidated citizens nor in the Mexicanos, at they don’t hinder him to realize his plan to leave town as soon as possible together with the rest of his family. Even “revenge” is not a reason for him to act. Not until his tough wife takes the egoistic deadbeat, to solidarise with the tortured population.and finish the “Mexican Plague”. Acting is really good: Gemma with some neat stunts and the really sweet Lorella de Luca as well as “Martin” and Sancho as bandidos with middle-class ambitions make a good job. Atmospherically the film is a blend of US- and Spaghetti-Western. After my fancy it’s a bit too slow, but nicely photographed. In addition we have a good score by Morricone with a beamy orchester, including choirs, violins and brass contrasting to a sole organ, picking up the bitter-sweet title-theme.
