blindNearly 20 years are gone since the end of Civil War, but especially Texas is quite far away from being pacified. Here are different conspirator groups active, which only have one thing in common: the planned murder of liberal president Garfield (Van Johnson). The group led by loaded Pinkerton (Fernando Rey) and the Texan governor (Julio Peña) wants to accomplish “Texan” interests, what means their own, in national politics. For that reason they have installed a vice-president (José Suarez), who is blackmailable by some “papers”, Pinkerton possesses. The other group around the manic killer Wallace (Mike Harvey) and Dallas’ sheriff Jefferson (Benito Steffanelli) aims to achieve a new Civil War with – of course - a new result with the murder. Although the assassination of Garfield finally succeeds, things go wrong for the assassins. First the vice-president refuses to play the dirty game and confides in Garfield’s right hand McDonald (Warren Vanders) to decomplexify the situation. Second there is Bill Willer (Giuliano Gemma), whose father (Antonio Casas) was killed by the conspirators and whose best friend Jack (Ray Saunders) was blamed for the assassination and liquidated by the real murderers. These things don’t amuse Bill, oh no, folx, they don’t actually. Finally the bourgeois “Pinkerton-branch” wants to dispose of the dingy and now redundant accomplices fast. Thus they blame the murder on them without further ado. Only the colts are able to interfuse the filthy thicket … and therefor Bill Willer is the right man.

The Gunslinger says:

blindWith „The Price of Power“ capable Tonino Valerii staged a political SW, whose message isn’t packed in a Mexican revolt or revolution as usual. OK, “message” is a bit piled on, folx, but nevertheless you can find an appeal for tolerance, equal rights and chances for all people and a non-violent, peaceful cooperation. The film clearly was inspired by the Kennedy-murder in 1963. It changes place of assassination from Washington D:C, where the historic Garfield was murdered, to Dallas. Furthermore the film introduces some pressure groups instead of a sole lunatic killer as well as an innocent patsy, who has to pay for the murder with his life. Even the staging of the assassination recalls the famous TV pix from Dallas in 1963. Up to the supporting roles, filled by proved personal from Riccardo Pizzuti up to “Pepe” Calvo and Francisco Braña, the acting efforts are well. Outstanding in my opinion is the US-actor Warren Vanders: His McDonald is a modern politician, who maintains quite friendly relations to all parties, but whose own aims stay obscure until the end. Benito Stefanelli has not much more to do than looking ferocious through his beard, but in one scene he can play to his abilities as experienced stuntman and furthermore he’s responsible for the film’s gunplay. Altogether it’s obvious, that Valerii could work with a noticeable budget, which is not wasted, folx. The Bacalov-score is highly delectable too with it’s melancholy main theme, which rides along with strings, a female choir, guitars and a blues harp.
