After he has earned his medical degree, George Benson (Luigi Montefiori) returns home from San Francisco to the farm of his elder brother Jonathan (“Ty Hardin”). Here he finds the usual country and family life idyll with all its normal frictions, but anger pulls up. Since there are some veritable gold deposits rumoured to be nearby, there is much riff-raff comes into the small town of Good City, hard to handle for the overcharged and mostly pickled sheriff (Guido Lollobrigida). So Doc Benson only wants to marry his flame Laura (Constanza Spada), to return with her to San Francisco. But his plans are foiled by some rogues around the brothers Fargas (Bruno Corazzari, Dominic Barto, Frederico Boido) seeking for gold close-by. These need some money to continue their gold-seeking. They attack the ranch, kill all attendants, blaming the crime on three jailbirds, who they liberate out of prison just for that purpose. George, who wasn’t there, is anxious for revenge. But upon who he can retaliate? The only survivor of the massacre is comatose, and the three suspects deny the crime. Then he gets some unexpected help by bar singer Jane (Anita Saxe).

The Gunslinger says:

Frankly speaking, folx, I wasn’t up on this flick very much, because I didn’t made really good experiences with the oeuvre of Sergio Garrone. But this time Sergio has delivered a film, which convinced my by its roughness. Here on bludgeons, rapes, shoots in the back of completely unsuspecting victims, that it’s a sheer delight. All this picturized capable by Guglielmo Mancori and his assistant Aristide Massaccessi, better known as Joe D’Amatao. Some special camera angles and the repeated use of a hand-camera bring in some dynamic and variety in the sometimes a bit static events.
The cast generally makes a nice job too: Whereas Luigi Montefiori with toned hair despite his pole position can’t really set a course, are the baddies properly good ;-): Bruno Corazzari and Dominc Barto convince as ruthless brothers with our beloved Frederico Boido as junior partner; furthermore Steffen Zacharias as bigoted saloon owner, unfortunately only an underpart. Special credits to Guido Lollobrigida as desperated sheriff, and Nello Pazzafini with his solid performance as meanie: as cowardly as devious.
The score by de Masi isn’t exciting, but with its guitars, trumpet-dominated horns, strings and percussion purflings highly consumable. Although there are some frailties in the story, driving the acting persons into only hardly comprehensible actions, this film is one of Garrones strongest SW.
