Content: VIP visit in the Wild West: Japanese Samurai Yamoto (Hideo Saito) and the imperial pony Shin Mei is travelling the plain land by train. They are accompanied by Sakura (Tomas Milian), an intellectual challenged free time swordmaster. Because Shin Mei is of incredible goodwill, the pony is kidnapped soon and Yamoto dead. The horsenappers claim one million dollars cash. Sakura, who can’t stand this shame, wants to avenge his master and to get back the horse. But the Japanese ambassador doesn’t trust Sakura’s abilities and engage incorruptible sheriff Gideon (Eli Wallach) for his support, who should deliver the ransom. Swiss adventurer and notorious hustler Stetson (Giuliano Gemma), who is attracted by the money, joins our couple. In order to redeem the “hostage”, the three have to face several surprising story-twists.
| The Casketnail says: “Shoot first …” is the last western by “Big Sergio”, who isn’t able to reach the quality-level of his best works. Corbucci’s sole deficiency here takes maximum effects: his scruffiness, when he has run out of steam. Thus the plot is a bit erratic, stringing episode to episode without finding a real suspense curve. But first Corbucci wasn’t able to make real baddies and second he could trust on a competent ensemble, having obviously fun to fool around. Wallach, Gemma and Milian save the film as well as its countless references to the genre: i.e. the dough is hidden on the graveyard, Gemma drags a casket and … and… Conclusion: Not a milestone in the oeuvre of Corbucci, but surely above average, all the more, if you compare it to other Spaghetti comedies.
