Content: blindLawyer Timothy Benson (Sean Flynn) likes hugging his little dog much more than facing up rough life in the West. Unfortunately the snotty jurist has succeeded a prospering goldmine, in which bandido chief Sancho Rodriguez (Fernando Sancho) is interested too. He uses every opportunity bullying Benson, to “convince” him to cede the mine to the Mexicanos. But in vain. As the Rodriguez gang kills all his employees, Benson’s right hand Corky (Poldo Bendani) takes the initiative. The former Sergeant hires five old wartime comrades to meet Rodriguez eye to eye. From now on the boys have got their hands full to turn the soft Benson into a hardboiled gunslinger. Rodriguez, who gets aware of these activities neutralize our sextet by framing them a murder with the help of the corrupt Sheriff. Now he can “bargain” unhindered with Benson, but the lawyer can show, that the school of hard knocks by the old soldiers wasn’t for the birds.
| The Gunslinger says: blindThis flick is the genre debut of Romolo Guerrieri, uncle of Enzo Castellari and thus member of the active Girolami-clan. But simultaneously it’s probably the weakest of his three SW. The film is a callow blend of “Magnificient-Seven-theme”, to which the original title alludes obviously, and Western-comedy. So on the one hand it strives for a rough atmosphere, when i.e. Rodriguez tortures the captured heroes or fleeing Mexicanos are shot in the back. On the other hand some characters have strong comical elements, as the hard drinking Abel (Tito Garcia) or Rodriguez himself, who is played by Fernando Sancho as a caricature, a fat cat, who is too big for his boots. Even Sean Flynn’s lawyer has something of a Giuliano-Gemma-figure, but stays too undetermined between earnest and tongue in cheek. Atmospherically the film is still dominated by the US-Western, which also gets evident by the orchestral score of Gino Peguri. Furthermore we see some light faults: When´i.e. “Welcome” on a huge transparent is written with double “L”, it deranges me. A word to Sean Flynn: He was the son of the much more famous Errol. In the first time he worked as actor, before he became photographer and went to Asia. In 1970 he was kidnapped by the Red Khmer and was missing since then. In March 2010 his remains were detected in a mass grave.
