Content: Bountyhunter Sartana sits relaxed on a plaid, eating some hard-boiled eggs, while watching the raid of a stagecoach by mexican bandidos. He remarks that these only kill the escort. But instead of robbing the charge, the Mexicans throw some dynamite inside the coach and disappear. Sartana gets curious: He extinguishs the burning fuse and states, that there are only some bags inside, filled with sand. First Sartana collects the corpses to cash the bounty, before starting his investigations, leading him to Apalooza, a small boomstown and poibt of origin of the coach. Apalooza is under control of Sam Spencer, boss of the local mine corporation, and his right hand Baxter. They organize the goldtransports Apalooza-Dodge City for the golddiggers, who only get a small advance for their findings. These transports never reach their destination. Sartana realizes, that Spencer and Baxter in collaboration with mexican Bandido Chief Mantras play really dirty with the people. Things become even more complicated, as Sartana’s acquintance and obvious rival, the excentric gunlinger Sabbath, enters the scene.
| The Gunslinger says: SW with a mild taste of comedy, lacking tempo despite its actually good constructed plot. Thanks to the experienced direction by Carnimeo, we finally have an average result at least. During Hill once again pulls his stunt as black-coated Sartana/Sartana/Halleluja ripp-off, Southwood shows a weak performance, because he doesn’t show his manierisms, as he should do. One year later in “A Fistful of Lead”, again by Carnimeo and with Hill, he did it much better. Another point to criticize, is the lack of atmosphere. But on the other side there are of course some pluses, as the split-screen-sequence. Hats off to Stelvio Massi for many unusual shots and to Francesco de Masi, who once more contributed a highly enjoyable score, dominated by trumpets, harp, violins and guitarras. | Rating: $$$
