Content: There's a long lasting war between the Mounters on one side and the Campos family on the other, disputing their right of residence in California. To finish bloodshed, the families arrange to meet for a final showdown: The losers shall finally leave. But against the arrangement the Mounters are ambushed by the underhand Mexicanos and lose lots of men. The dupes can't await help by sheriff Cooper (Piero Lulli), who is connected with the youngest Campos-son Rodrigo (Pietro Matellanza) by a paranormal incident. The situation gets even more complicated, as Johnny Mounters (Karl Hirenbach) falls in love with Julieta Campos Cristina Galbo), who is promised to Cooper in marriage. There are only some hasty meetings at secret locations until the lovers are fingered to the Campos by jealous barsinger Rosalind (Maria Cuadra). A greek or Shakespearian tragedy takes its course.
| The Gunslinger says: With this SW director Gianni Puccini actually only wanted to do a favour to his producer, with whom he realized some ambitious projects before. But as result we got a movie, which is not completely felicitous but very unusual. I don't mean the classic reference – some other SW as „Johnny Hamlet“ or „Man: His Pride and his Vengeance“ refer to Shakespeare or Prosper Merimée – but the paranormal elements. For example Rodrigo and Cooper are related, because once they fired on each other and the bullets meet in the middle: both survived. Finly the death himself (rumoured to be Paul Naschy) has a short appearance as back-clothed killer. The plot itself, which handles the „Romeo-and-Juliet-Theme“, doesn't permit much reach of play, even if Puccini washes the given end by Shakespeare inside out. But there's not much tension, and the action scenes are staged a bit floppy. Acting efforts are OK, although I won't become a friend of Karl Hirenbach, who in my opinion is a very limited actor: He has to eat the shorts of proved forces like Piero Lulli or Luis Induni. I was surprised by the strong performance of Pietro Martellanza, who masters his part as one of the leading characters very good. Camerawotk by Mario Montuori is varied and skillful. Gino Peguri' score features the usual suspects – from guitars, bluesharp, horns up to choirs, whistling and organ – but concerning its melody is not typical SW, but rather orientated to classic cinema.
