Content: Hiram Coburn ("Bud Spencer") bumbles poor rather than good through the Wild West. He is followed obstinately by Sonny Bronston (Jack Palance) and his sister Mary (Dany Saval), whose virginity Hiram has robbed in a drunken night. Now the brother and sister Bronston want Hiram to marry Mary. His position even becomes more complicated as a lynchmob ants to blow out his lights after he has “found” some horses. Hiram is rescued by old lawyer Anderson and his nephew Chip (Renato Cestiè). As reward Anderson wants Hiram to bring Chip to Westland, in the case the old man dies on the road. This happens faster as anyone had considered possible. Hiram takes Chip under his wings and escorts the child to Westland, where Chip should accept his inheritance: a farm. But the building is not much more than a board partition with wasteland around and a font, which only produces muddy water. Nevertheless there are some candidates, who are really interested in this rotten country estate: the sinister sheriff (Roberto Camardiel), who is the priest of Westland too, and an earth-eating individual (Franco Giacobini) out of the neighbouring city. Their more or less lucrative and friendly offers Hiram rejects in the sense of Chip: these rejections are of course bloody painful, especially for the sheriff’s men. Unfortunately Sonny and his friends arrive to claim the immediate marriage of Hiram and Mary. That is the last straw for Hiram …
| The Casketnail says: Quite unspectacular but technically well made comedy by Maurizio Lucidi with Carlo Pedersoli as soloist: On has to consider, that he is a bit overstrained as leading actor. In his following films he acts much more competent. Jack Palance, even in this quite ridiculous created role, puts him over the barrel, thanks to his professional education and experience. The plot doesn’t knock us from the feet, folx, especially the smartass Chip annoys. But instead the brawls are well timed and the appeal lies in great stunt-work too. That seems much more professional as in many of the competing comedies – except the Spencer/Hill-flicks. Conclusion: If you consider all pros and cons, you get an average SW, which doesn’t hurt.
