to our Spaghetti Western Wiki! You're all invited to join and share your love and knowledge of this movie genre with us. So, let's go! It was in the middle of the Swinging Sixties, when the Wild West had migrated to Italy: after some half-baked, US-Western-inspirated efforts, Sergio Leone was kicking off the typical Spaghettiwestern with "A Fistful of Dollars", which rapidly breathed new life into a genre already considered dead and buried on Boot Hill. At the same time, this renaissance meant the cynical end of some basic American myths, such as the traditionally positive motivations of the American Western: exploration, settlement, the building of towns and railroads. These were replaced by new motivations: above all, the thirst for money and revenge. Once positive aspects of the genre, like the railway, suddenly became negative forces which eroded and destroyed human values. The West was no longer a place for idealism... The Spaghetti (or Macaroni, or Italowestern) genre produced only a handful of really great films until the middle of the 70's. Most of the movies of the genre, usually produced in the former Yugoslavia or in Spain, were of average-to-low quality, and many -- to be honest -- were really crap. But, hey, who doesn't enjoy a good romp in the mud? So let's go, Companeros! This site offers reviews, pictures, and history of the good, bad, and ugly films of the Spaghetti Western -- plus, our own incompetent and highly subjective criticism! Enjoy! |
